Keep it clean: Start 2011 off on the right foot

January is, for many people, a time to clean up their lives, whether that be clearing their arteries (go broccoli, oatmeal and cardio!) or their houses (when in doubt, donate). It’s only fitting then that January is Clean up Your Computer month.

If that’s on your list of things to clean, then I suggest you check out Smith Micro’s products for keeping your computer in line: CheckIt, Internet Cleanup, Spring Cleaning and of course, StuffIt Deluxe!

Smith Micro Reflections: 2010

It’s the last day of 2010. It’s been a heck of a year, if I must say. We started this blog. I tried my hand at fear-based writing; what?!? I said I tried. And then (thank goodness!) there were guest bloggers.

Poser Pro 2010 wowed. Anime Studio learned to obey the laws of physics and StuffIt gave us all sorts of destinations, like SendStuffNow. And Miki 3.0 even made an appearance ;)

2010 was a great year for Expander

It’s around that time where people look back and take stock of what they’ve done over the past year. For instance, this past year I have written about Poser 95 times, Manga Studio 71 times and pie 18 times. (You’re surprised? I didn’t think so.)

Another, more notable mark is StuffIt Expander’s achievement in 2010. It was the number 5 most downloaded Mac software on Download.com. It was downloaded 353,042 times in 2010! Dang, that’s impressive!

“For Mac users who need more than simple RAR extraction, this longtime compression tool is the first pick on Download.com.” Continue reading

Learn to teleport (your files) with StuffIt

After a quick trip overseas for the Thanksgiving holiday, I’m beginning to rethink what my superpower would be. Maybe being able to teleport is better than being able to breathe underwater. After all, I’d still have to swim the Atlantic if I wanted to travel.

This got me thinking more about how great our new StuffIt Deluxe 2011 for Mac is, what with its super-easy file-sending ways. Check out one of the latest video tutorials, which explains how to use StuffIt to send ginormous files with SendStuffNow:

True or False: You deserve a gift

Whether or not you celebrate the holidays, you’re probably bombarded with ads and messages to buy people gifts. (I plead guilty, your honor.) But what about you? Don’t you deserve something awesome? We think so.

So in honor of the holiday season, we’ve put together a creative gift basket that we’re giving away. It’s got so many goodies, I almost can’t stand it! For serious: It’s worth more than $2,000!

One lucky person will win Manga Studio EX 4, Poser Pro 2010, Anime Studio Pro 7, tutorial books and DVDs to help your creative process, loads of other software, a 3D mouse, a year subscription to Animation Magazine, ImagineFX, 3D World, and Computers Arts (which isn’t pictured), and other goodies. To see the full prize list and values, click here.

The only thing you have to do to enter is answer some questions about the products you’re going to win. It’s an easy quiz, I swear! It’s only six questions (OK seven if you include the one about your email address), and I even include some links to find the answers if you get stuck.

Here are the rules, quick and dirty: Enter only once. The quiz is open from now until December 9, 2010 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. Once you answer, you’ll be entered into the drawing, which will go down December 10, 2010 and the gift basket will be mailed that day. Oh, and it’s not really a basket…it just has such a nice ring to it ;)

Happy holiday/gift-giving season from us at here at Smith Micro. Now go check out the quiz!

Update! We added a super-awesome gift to the prize pack: Check it out!

If you can’t beat ‘em, shop online

Gift giving is loads of fun; picking out the perfect present for every person on your list is so rewarding. The one bummer for me about gift giving during the holidays is the physical act of going shopping. All those people so close together, I feel like I’m stuck in a subway car!

Thankfully there’s the Internet. Whether you’re doing all your shopping online or just grabbing a few good deals, you don’t have to leave your house or your pajamas to get what you want. And there are no crowds!

This year, get a jump on your Black Friday shopping by heading over to our store right now for 60% off everything!* Just use the coupon code BLACKFRIDAY2010. You’ll save storewide until Tuesday, November 30. Shop now and be done before Black Friday is even here. Sleep in and enjoy your Friday. No screaming kids, no parking lot feuds and no shoes necessary ;)

*I’m not a fan of asterisks, but I gotta tell you that this offer doesn’t apply on preorders for our newest hardware addition, Station. That’s it? Yep, that’s it.

Keep tabs on Smith Micro’s contests

Every now and then The Boss comes up with a great idea. I guess he had to become The Boss somehow, right? One of the latest ideas to come from him is an events calendar for all the contests and promotions we’re have going on.

In the beginning, I made this calendar only because I was told to, but it seems to be quite handy. And Content Paradise has one and it works out really well for them!

For instance, I have the Webcomics: What’s Cooking release date on there, along with the details for New York Comic-Con. You can also see that I extended the dates for the Dave Gibbons poster comic contest, and there’s another Manga Studio contest coming at the end of this month! Wicked!

Add it to your Google calendar if you’re so inclined or just check back here every so often for the latest information on all the things Smith Micro has going on. Thanks Boss for a great idea ;)

It’s only fair: Manga Studio comic contest!

UPDATE! The contest has been extended until October 17!!

All my life I’ve been hearing the phrase Life isn’t fair. And while I know that for the most part it may be true, I’d like to think in my little world I try hard to keep things balanced.

It occurred to me that Poser has been getting a lot of attention, with the image contest and the anniversary contest. (You only turn 15 once.) And Anime Studio has a contest with Advanced Anime as well. What about Manga Studio?

So I decided to go out on a limb and ask The Boss if I could mail some posters anywhere in the world. Not just any posters, signed Dave Gibbons posters from SDCC 2010. And guess what? He said yes!

So here’s the contest: Create a comic for me about our newest version of StuffIt Deluxe based on my stellar sketch. (Try not to be jealous of my artistic abilities. It’s tough being this talented.) It doesn’t have to be an exact copy; you have artistic license.

Here are the rules. Submit your comic between now and October 17 at midnight Pacific time. Put the words “StuffIt Sketch Contest” somewhere in the Additional Credit field. Use Manga Studio for your work. (You can use other software in addition, but please, in moderation!) Our brilliant team will be judging your comics based on effort, creativity (within the bounds of the sketch), and neatness.

There will be 10 winners in all, and I’m super excited to be able to mail overseas, so make my groveling worth it and submit your entry! (I have a world map in my cube and it would be great to use it for something besides day dreaming my next world adventure!)

Curious about our other contests and promotions? Check out our event calendar with the latest info!
